For Yale Students

YUDW projects are staffed by professional students of the School of Architecture supervised by faculty of the School.  Students from Yale College and other Yale professional schools frequently join specific project teams.

Workshop Fellows and Assistants receive practical and technical training and professional mentorship in urban, architectural, and landscape design, techniques of community engagement and advocacy, and urban research methods, with particular emphasis on advanced principles of regional and neighborhood resilience, while working on real community-based projects. Eligible employees may receive AXP hours, contributing towards their licensure.

Students and recent graduates from Yale and other institutions may join the Workshop as Design Assistants (DAs), Research Assistants (RAs), Postgraduate Associates (PAs), and Community Design Fellows (CDFs).  Workshop faculty also occasionally supervise Visiting Assistants in Research (VARs) from other institutions.

Design Assistant (DA) and Resarch Assistant (RA) positions
are offered on a rolling basis to current Yale School of Architecture graduate students, students from Yale College, and from other professional and graduate programs at Yale, and work part-time during the academic term and full time during the summer.  These are hourly paid positions and students work on one or more ongoing projects of the Workshop.  Students can respond to job opportunities on the UDW website and elsewhere or send inquiries to yudw@yale.edu.

Postgraduate Associateships (PA)
are offered on an annual basis, subject to funding, for recent graduates of professional architecture, planning, urban design and landscape programs, for one year, renewable to a maximum of two.  PAs work full time and receive advanced training on the job.

Community Design Fellowships (CDF) are offered occasionally and include the opportunity to team teach Yale Courses alongside the faculty directors, and offer the opportunity to collaborate on YUDW projects and develop independent research.

Visiting Assistants in Research (VAR) include students who are currently enrolled in a graduate program at another university and who wish to pursue full time dissertation research at Yale. They may be admitted to the Division of Special Registration (DSR) as a Visiting Assistant in Research (VAR). VARs may not enrol in classes at Yale and are limited to a maximum of two years of study.

Yale President’s Public Service Fellows (YPPSF) We have frequently hosted a summer YPPS Fellow to work on New Haven community based projects.  This program is open to Yale undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.  For more information on this program, visit the Yale Office of New Haven Affairs website.

Dwight Hall Urban Fellows We also occassionally host Dwight Hall Urban Fellows as team members.  For more information, visit the Dwight Hall Urban Fellows website.

Please note that the YUDW does not fund or host doctoral students.
