DesignCase Lindholmen is an urban design case study of a crucial waterfront area in the Gothenburg RiverCity at a pivotal moment in the ongoing redevelopment of the Gothenburg riverfront in the political, social, and economic evolution of the city.

DesignCase Lindholmen proposes both a new framework for Lindholmen and an urban design for South Lindholmen, deeply rooted in a “thick” and multiscalar reading of Lindholmen’s specific existing conditions and history, and an understanding of Lindholmen’s position within the metropolitan geography of the city. The framework consists of three elements which emerge from a reading of the existing conditions. By providing Lindholmen with a distinctive, enhanced public space network, consisting of emergent and new spaces, Lindholmen’s disconnected zones will be tied together around a new identity, and connected to areas adjacent to Lindholmen and further afield. A new, accessible and resilient public waterfront will give the district and city visual and physical access to the water, while adapting to climate change and providing inclusive opportunities for recreation. Finally, a new block, street and building framework will accommodate a range of evolving uses, clarify the relationship of public to private and service spaces, while encouraging dense, street-oriented, pedestrian friendly development built around new public spaces.
